The history of Gianduja...the famous Piedmontese mask

It was born in Callianetto from the intuition of two puppeteers, Giovanni Battista Sales and Gioacchino Bellone. The two puppeteers began their career in Genoa, despite being from Turin, where they began to stage a show whose protagonist was a character called Gironi. Gironi satirized the politics of the time.

It so happens that political power was in the hands of the doge whose name was Girolamo Durazzo and therefore the people mocked him by identifying him with Gironi.

The two puppeteers were arrested and their puppets burned.

They were subsequently expelled from the city, returned to Turin and restarted the reruns of Gironi. Except (and a twist) Napoleon's brother was actually called Girolamo.

They were therefore sentenced to death for plotting against the state; they were locked up in the palatine towers but from which they cleverly managed to escape.

They reached Asti and were welcomed by the De Rolandis family who had them hide in Callianetto in a small farmhouse in the woods called "CHABOT" owned by the D'Amico counts.

After an initial period of hiding, they began to frequent the "Piola", the town tavern where the puppet of Giovanni della Douja was born, inspired by the many Giovannis, frequenters of the place who loved good wine and cheerfulness.

In fact, the name Gianduja derives from Giovanni and the famous "Doia" i.e. the jug that contained the wine.

Three centuries later, the “Ciabot d'Gianduja” continues to host lovers of good food and convivial entertainment with great satisfaction from the friendly puppet who slyly peeks out in effigy from large and small paintings and statues.
